Airport Day 2000 -
Report by Bruce Bennett
7/18/00
Wow! What a day!
A huge success, well over 3000 people showed up, the
CAP did a
spectacular job of parking acres of cars without incident, over 500 guests
enjoyed the CAA pancake breakfast put on by club volunteers, no problem
with
visitor Aircraft parking, approx. 50 beautiful display Aircraft including;
a
mint Stagger-wing, a couple of BE-18s, dozens of impressive experimentals
including Vans new RV-9.
Jack Lenhardt and Sam Richardson rounded up an
impressive group of
Warbirds including; Two SNJs, a P-51, a B-25, a bunch of Yaks including
Sam
Richardson's show-stopper, a Stearman, a Wildcat, Also some new Cessnas,
a
new Piper, and more (I wasn't taking notes!)
In what would be a story
by itself, The Aurora Police worked together
(with Harpers organization) with the Marion and Clackamas County Sheriffs
to
close the roads on the North, south and west sides of the Airport at the
same
time as the FAA (with Renny's help) officially closed the Airport and the
surrounding Airspace to allow Aerobatics.
Two F-15s did a fly-by,
almost all the Warbirds Rumbled and Roared by
with low passes and Sam's big Yak in formation with the Vampire Jet
leaving a
smoke trail was spectacular. All that led up to the Aerobatic Aerial
demonstration put on by Renny Price - it was beautiful and breathtaking.
Back on the ground,
After entering through the Aurora Airport Days 2000
Arches constructed by John Finklea the crowds were kept abreast by the
huge
sound system held up in the Air by a lift donated by Warn and directing
people to the Antique shops in Aurora (after the show) and the displays of
the; Aurora Police, Aurora Fire, Pacific Coast Avionics, Columbia
Helicopters, Angel Flight, Aurora Aviation, Antique and Hot Rod
motorcycles &
Cars, Hillsboro Aviation and the large Food booth.
All this was organized
by and overseen by Harper Poling, racing around in
one of three John Deere "Gators" donated by Ernst Hardware (2)
and Rich
Warden. Thank You very much Harper, and Thanks to the Dozens of volunteers
who made it happen!
At the end of the day, not a single
safety or noise complaint was
received!
Ps. Please correct any errors, add
any photos you have, and forward this to;
all PAAM members, and anyone else who may be interested.
Thank You,
Bruce Erik Bennett
